Dining on the Cheap in Athens

It has been said, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Might I add, "Wnen in Greece, do as the Greeks do..." That would mean lamb...and feta...and gyros....lots of them! So John and I did just that. After evading passionate couples lining the site of the ancient Agora, we made our way along a cobbled street filled with tavernas (little European cafes). Half of the tavernas' activities happened behind their facades of habitated weathered stone; the other half spilled onto the sidewalk inviting passerbys to sample the gastronomy.

We settled on a busy place, called "Tupi Strouya" (assuming the greek upside down "Y" is pronounced like a "Y"), whose spits of lamb slowly droned away on a rotissery while we ate. We were definitely among locals at this dinig establishment, but they warmed up to us in a heartbeat as the hearty gentleman behind the counter whipped out two menus and tried to make the sale. We decided upon the feta in oil & oregano with bread followed by the 2 gyro and 1 kebab platter for two. Boy were we in for a treat! The platter came out as a giant heap of interconnected shaved lamb, shaved chicken, pita, cucumber sauce, and shreded lettuce and carrots. How to go about eating this bohemoth? Open up your mouth and shovel it in, just like the locals! We feel like we have had an authentic taste of Greece among its countrymen. At the end of our meal, I wanted to stand on the table and shout "Opah," just like in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding!" So I did.

    We just had a Bohemoth of a turkey, and we cracked into the cornacopia of family! Be safe, have fun, and waiting to hear more of the adventures of the two compadres. Uncle David, Cuz Michael, and your loving mother.
