Dream Catchers
I am consistently encouraged by people who overcome extreme obstacles and handicaps in order to pursue their dreams. This morning I had the unique opportunity to fly with a group of such people. As I approached the gate this morning I found 10-12 electric wheelchairs lined up with their occupants eagerly awaiting boarding. This immediately sparked my curiosity so I came closer to investigate. I was to discover they were a Special Olympics Power Soccer team on their way home to Arizona from the international power soccer championship.
As much flying as I’ve done, I can’t remember a time where I’ve traveled with even one electric wheelchair, so I was curious how America West would manage this as the chairs would obviously not fit down an aircraft aisle. My interest was soon met as they began boarding the athletes. Two by two, they wheeled down the jet way as an America West crew assisted them from their wheelchairs on the jet way to their seats. They then systematically brought each chair back up the jet way to make room for two more, eventually taking all the wheelchairs outside into the belly of the plane.
It was quite a feat, but what impressed me more was cooperation of the America West staff. They appeared to have additional crew members who specialized in caring for such passengers. The ramp crews efficiently moved each of the chairs to where it needed to be and, with the help of two of the coaches traveling with the team, were able to efficiently load them below while disconnecting batteries and what not. The gate staff worked on relocating people into other seats on the plane in order to keep this group together and keep other passengers with their families and friends as well. Everyone involved treated this unique situation as if they did the same thing 100 times a day, while providing utmost respect to each passenger.
Yes, we were late taking off and some people grumbled about close connections, but I believe it’s a small price to pay for such service to those requiring a bit more flexibility than most passengers. As far as the “Arizona Heat” players, they finished out their season in 6th place (not bad for a world championship!) and say they enjoyed playing the French team the most. Rarely have I met anyone with such energy and love for life as these players—flying with them was truly a blessing. I applaud America West for taking the additional time, providing the additional resources, and going the extra mile to help such a special group of dream-catchers. GO HEAT!!!
